The Joshimath-Malari-Niti national highway (NH107-B), linking to the Indo-China border, finally reopened on Sunday evening.
The road had been blocked for vehicular movement since Friday due to persistent landslides near Lata village, around 26 km from Joshimath.
The landslides had severely disrupted traffic, particularly affecting defence vehicles from the Indian Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), who were unable to move supplies to nearly a dozen villages on the border.
According to TOI, Chamoli district’s disaster management officer, Nand Kishore Joshi, announced, “The road was partially reopened for pedestrians and small vehicles on Sunday afternoon and was fully opened for heavy vehicles by late evening.”
Villages such as Dronagiri, Garpak, Malari, and Gamshali in the Niti Valley had been cut off due to the blockade. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) worked tirelessly to clear the debris and restore traffic.
A viral video on social media showed the landslide in action, with massive rocks and debris tumbling onto the highway. Local resident Ram Singh expressed frustration, stating that the recurring landslides were exacerbated by ongoing road widening work in the area.
