New Delhi: Power to all. That's what the Maharashtra government hopes the Girye Ultra Mega Power Project will achieve.
The state faces a daily power shortage of about 4,500 MW, which has forced parts of it into load shedding of between six and 14 hours a day.
The project, part of an ambitious package of seven power projects, will add 4,000 MW to Maharashtra's power supply.
The government says response from bidders worldwide, for the project, has been good.
The Secretary at the Power Ministry, R V Shahi says, "The response has been very good, especially from companies in China, Hong Kong and South Korea. Some companies are interested in investing and in private equity placement as well."
The Girye Power Project, which calls for an investment of Rs 16,000 crore, has seen an expression of interest from 22 Indian energy groups including NTPC, Reliance Energy and Essar Power.
Though the project may see the light of day in eight years, the Maharashtra government has inked pacts with eight power companies, which will generate 12,500 MW and start functioning in five years.
MSEB officials say that once the Girye project is running, the state will see a power surplus.
