The year 2024 began on a good note, with several investors joining forces to support a fellow individual, Amit Anam, who needed funds for a lung transplant. The collective effort garnered significant attention on social media. An impressive sum of Rs 60 lakh was raised within just 60 hours through the fundraising platform and direct transfers to his account.
Information from Dr DY Patil Medical College, Hospital, and Research Centre in Pune reveals that Amit Anam was diagnosed with Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), resulting in respiratory failure and necessitating oxygen support. Following an assessment by the medical college’s team, bilateral lung transplantation was recommended for his condition.
As reported by Moneycontrol, the hospital disclosed that Amit Anam’s treatment would incur a cost of Rs 60 lakh, including Rs 25 lakh for hospital stay and post-operative care. The urgency of the operation was highlighted.
Dr Rahul Kendre, a pulmonologist and lung-transplant physician at Dr DY Patil Hospital, stated, “Amit Anam is suffering from interstitial lung disease, leaving him dependent on oxygen support for the past two years. He was evaluated for a lung transplant a year ago, and his family has been striving to secure funds. To secure funds quicker, they opted for a fund-raising initiative.
“Due to the risk of pulmonary infections and other life-threatening complications, lung transplantation is crucial. If any complications arise, it may worsen his condition and pose challenges for the transplant. Hence, the lung transplant should be conducted as soon as possible,” he further said.
Investor Safir Anand, who had appealed for contributions, extended thanks on social media after achieving the fundraising goal. Likewise, Amit Anam expressed his appreciation to the public via a tweet, saying, “Thank you for the incredible support to my campaign”. He also shared a link for individuals to avail tax benefits on their contributions.
Ayush Agrawal, one of the organisers of the fundraising, mentioned that individuals generously contributed amounts as significant as Rs 27,000 in a single donation.
Agrawal stated, “While there are reports of trolling and scamming that keep coming out, this one was a collective effort to do good.”
Despite facing restrictions on the bank account, donors remained undeterred and transitioned to making contributions through a fundraising platform.
