Mumbai: The markets ended with marginal gains after seeing some hiccups in the noon trades. It was a dull day for the markets as there was selling pressure in realty, auto and banking stocks.
Earlier in the day, the markets made smart recovery from the day’s low. The Sensex saw a triple-digit correction in noon but was up again by the end of the day to end almost flat. Oil marketing companies were the standout performance with HPCL, BPCL and IOC finishing among the top gainers.
There was some profit booking at the higher levels but Nifty held above the 4,900 mark. The market breadth was negative as midcap and smallcap indices underperformed.
Bharti, Hindalco and Cipla are among the top gainers on the indices. PSU refineries HPCL and BPCL have surged on the bourses. Among the top losers are Bajaj Auto, Hero Honda, Reliance Petro, GAIL, Maruti Udyog and SBI.
The IT stocks showed signs of stabilizing after the dollar gained some strength against the rupee. At 3:31 hours (IST), the Sensex was down 12.64 points or 0.08 per cent at 16833.19, and the Nifty down 7.35 points or 0.15 per cent at 4924.85.
About 1157 shares advanced, 1808 shares declined and 67 shares were unchanged.
It was a gentle drift down from the higher levels and Nifty breached the 4,900 mark. The market breadth was negative as the midcap space was crumbling down over 1 per cent. It has got into the lower groove of the momentum as Sensex and Nifty were trading near day's low.
The most active shares on the BSE were IFCI at Rs 103.50 with 18,796,328 shares, Reliance Natural at Rs 93.80 with 18,809,192 shares and GMR Infra at Rs 877.45 with 1,277,985 shares.
JSW Steel at 785 up 6.33 per cent, JindalStainless at 168 up 3.32 per cent and SAIL at 203.20 up 2.57 per cent were the top gainers in the metals pack.
