ICC T20 World Cup 2024: A Look At The Skippers Of All The Participating Teams
England skipper Jos Buttler will defend England’s T20 title triumph in 2022 as he leads the Englishmen for a second-straight edition. Rohit Sharma and Mitchell Marsh have both won the tournament as players and will now look to add another as the team’s leader.

Within a few days, 20 nations will be competing for T20 World Cup glory in the United States and the West Indies. There will be both veteran and debuting skippers who will eye the ICC crown in the tournament’s ninth edition. England skipper Jos Buttler will defend England’s T20 title triumph in 2022 as he leads the Englishmen for a second-straight edition. Rohit Sharma and Mitchell Marsh have both won the tournament as players and will now look to add another as the team’s leader. On the other hand, captains including Kane Williamson and Babar Azam have previously guided their side into the tournament finals but have never won the T20 tournament. They will also be looking to make an impact in the West Indies and the USA.

Meet the captains of the 20 participating T20 World Cup teams –

Group A

India – Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma will be leading India’s campaign for a second T20I crown. He previously won the tournament in 2007 under the leadership of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The ex-Mumbai Indians skipper had a 417-run showing in 14 games in the IPL this season.

Pakistan – Babar Azam

Babar Azam will return to an ICC event once again as Pakistan’s captain. He recently produced some stellar knocks in a 2-1 series win. Babar has captained the 2009 winners to a final in the previous edition against England but his side lost by five wickets.

Canada – Saad Bin Zafar

Canadian all-rounder of Pakistani origin Saad Bin Zafar will be leading a debuting Canada side at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Saad has played over 38 T20I games while scoring 272 runs and scalping 43 wickets.

Ireland – Paul Stirling

Ireland’s veteran opener Paul Stirling will lead the nation in the Men’s T20 World Cup. Stirling has featured in 142 T20I matches for the Irishmen. In these matches, he has amassed 3589 runs and 20 wickets.

United States – Monank Patel

World Cup co-hosts the United States will be led by their 31-year-old wicketkeeper batter Monank Patel. The American batter has played 25 T20I matches for the USA and has scored 441 runs.

Group B

Australia – Mitchell Marsh

Australia will be led by Mitchell Marsh at the T20 World Cup in 2024. The Aussie all-rounder will be looking to amend his team’s failure in the 2022 edition of the tournament where they failed to make the knockout rounds despite playing on home soil.

England squad – Jos Buttler

England veteran Jos Buttler will lead his team’s T20 World Cup defence in the West Indies and the USA. Buttler was in good form in IPL 2024, notching two centuries while scoring 359 runs.

Namibia – Gerhard Erasmus

Gerhard Erasmus will lead an experienced Namibia side at the T20 World Cup. They qualified in the tournament off an unbeaten run at last year’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifiers. Erasmus will compete alongside his vice-captain JJ Smith.

Oman – Aqib Ilyas

Aqib Ilyas succeeded his former captain Zeeshan Maqsood as Oman’s new skipper for the T20 World Cup. The 31-year-old recently talked to ICC about how he was honoured to be entrusted with the new role. He will be aiming to lead his team to a few victories at the premier tournament.

Scotland – Richie Berrington

Richie Berrington will captain a fierce Scotland side at the World Cup. The Scotsmen will be looking to better their performances from the previous edition. They recorded a famous win over the West Indies in that campaign.

Group C

New Zealand – Kane Williamson

One of New Zealand’s all-time greats Kane Williamson was named captain of the Kiwi squad at the World Cup. Williamson had previously led New Zealand to the 2021 World Cup final where they couldn’t get past Australia.

West Indies – Rovman Powell

Rovman Powell will be leading the West Indies at the World Cup in Jason Holder’s absence. Powell didn’t have the best of IPL campaigns this season and will be looking to make a comeback at the upcoming ICC event.

Afghanistan – Rashid Khan

Afghanistan’s star all-rounder Rashid Khan will look to make a statement in the West Indies and the USA. He will lead his side’s spin department with support from Mohammad Nabi, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

Uganda – Brian Masaba

Brian Masaba has been tasked with leading Uganda’s squad at the T20 World Cup. He will be deputised bu by Riazat Ali Shah. Masaba has played 59 T20Is for Uganda, scoring 435 runs and taking 19 wickets.

Papua New Guinea – Assad Vala

Having led Papua New Guinea in the 2021 World Cup, Assad Vala will once again lead the Barramundis at the upcoming tournament. He helped his side seal a World Cup spot in the West Indies/USA in the East Asia-Pacific regional final that was played in July 2023.

Group D

South Africa – Aiden Markram

Aiden Markram will be playing his first-ever ICC tournament as South Africa’s skipper at the T20 World Cup. Markram has recorded 1118 runs and 10 wickets in 39 T20Is for the Proteas.

Sri Lanka – Wanindu Hasaranga

Named as Sri Lanka’s T20I captain in December last year, Wanindu Hasaranga will lead the 2012 World Cup winners in the West Indies and the USA. Hasranaga boasts 104 wickets and 650 runs for Sri Lanka in 65 T20I matches.

Bangladesh – Najmul Hossain Shanto

Having been appointed as Bangladesh’s skipper across all formats, Najmul Hossain Shanto will lead his team at the 2024 T20 World Cup. Hossain will be leading his squad to the tournament on the back of a solid 4-1 series win over Zimbabwe.

Nepal – Rohit Paudel

Rohit Paudel will lead Nepal at the T20I World Cup 2024. At 21 years of age, Paudel has amassed 1108 runs for his nation in just 49 matches. He has also taken five wickets in those fixtures.

Netherlands – Scott Edwards

Scott Edwards is set to lead the Netherlands at the T20 World Cup in 2024. The Dutchman has featured in 60 T20Is for the Netherlands and has scored 737 runs.
