IPL 2024: Mumbai Indians’ Special Gesture for Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan | WATCH
Suryakumar Yadav scored a match-winning 52 against RCB and the performance helped him claim the dressing-room Player of the Match award.

Suryakumar Yadav announced his arrival in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season with a blistering fifty against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Thursday. Surya was not part of the Mumbai Indians’ playing XI in the home game. He was subbed in the second innings as an impact player when the Hardik Pandya-led side was chasing a daunting target of 197 runs at the Wankhede Stadium. Surya scored a match-winning 52 against RCB and the performance helped him claim the dressing-room Player of the Match award.

MI have introduced a unique accolade to honour the top-performing players of the team in each match. Apart from Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan also received the special award from MI owner Nita Ambani. The youngster also deserves much credit for his team’s dominant triumph over RCB.

Ishan Kishan smashed 69 runs off 34 balls. His knock, which comprised seven boundaries and five sixes, undoubtedly built the foundation for a successful chase. Kishan was equally brilliant with his glovework. He pulled off a diving effort to take the crucial catch of Virat Kohli, who fell victim to Jasprit Bumrah for the fifth time in the history of the IPL.

Besides Virat Kohli, MI ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah sent off dangerous batters like Faf du Plessis and Mahipal Lomror. The Indian speedster wrapped up the game with a five-wicket haul. Thanks to his exceptional bowling, Bumrah took home the official Player of the Match award.

Speaking about Suryakumar Yadav, the 33-year-old batter missed the first few matches of this IPL. He made his first appearance of the season against Delhi Capitals last week but failed to produce anything significant. He looked to have found the groove back at home. Surya whacked five boundaries and four maximums during his 19-ball stint against RCB, recording a strike rate of more than 270.

As far as MI’s overall performance is concerned, the five-time champions made a disastrous start to the 2024 IPL campaign. After suffering three defeats in a row, they got the better of Delhi Capitals and RCB in consecutive matches. Courtesy of the back-to-back wins, MI have captured the seventh spot in the IPL 2024 standings.
