With a plethora of cricket leagues featuring yesteryear superstars including the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, Brett Lee, Muttiah Muralitharan among others mushrooming in recent years, a proposal has reportedly been sent to the BCCI to start a ‘legends league’ of its own.
According to a report in Dainik Jagran, few former India cricketers who have played in these leagues, met with BCCI Jay Shah and expressed their wish to organise a tournament on the lines of the Indian Premier League.
“We have received a proposal from former cricketers in this regard. We are mulling over it,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by the daily.
The BCCI hasn’t yet taken any concrete action on the suggestion and it’s highly unlikely that such a tournament could start anytime soon but it surely can become a reality in 2025.
The competition will feature players who have retired from international cricket and IPL too. The teams will be based out of various cities from around India ala IPL.
Like IPL, the proposal includes organising an auction in which the teams will place bids to buy players.
Road Safety World Series, World Championship of Legends, Global Legends League, Legends League are among the competitions that feature retired players from around the globe. However, all these tournaments are being organised by private bodies with no direct involvement of any national cricket board.
Although the World Championship of Legends, won by an Indian team captained by Yuvraj, was held in Birmingham earlier this year with England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) giving its approval.
As of now, the BCCI organises two T20 leagues – the IPL and the Women’s Premier League that features stars from around the world.
IPL was first held in 2008 with eight teams and it has since expanded to 10 franchises. On the other hand, WPL was launched in 2023 and features five teams.
