Babar Azam & Co have assembled in Dallas and are gearing up for their T20 World Cup campaign opener against hosts USA on Thursday. The Pakistan cricket team has already been under scrutiny following a disappointing England tour, where they lost the 4-match T20I series 2-0. And before they get started in the showpiece, their captain has hogged the limelight for body shaming his teammate Azam Khan.
In a video doing rounds on social media, Babar could be seen calling Khan a ‘Gainda‘ (Rhio) during the Pakistan team’s training session.
“Ay gainda [slur for overweight people] nai siddha hoya,” Babar could be heard saying.

The viral video has led to criticism of the Pakistan cricket team captain. Here’s how they reacted:
That’s their friendship. Babar didn’t abuse him behind the back…your tv channels were making so many personal comments…u should show concern about that..not about a friendly banter— Rohit Kaul (@rohitkaul23) June 3, 2024
Will be kicked out from T20 WC squad + Contract termination— Dhruv Rathee (@133off86_Hobart) June 4, 2024
This is disgusting, below the belt and outright shambolic. Babar Azam saying that “ay gainda nai siddha hoya” to Azam Khan in practice is an exhibit of everything which is wrong with our society and our team both. As captain you can’t be using such words.https://t.co/h5G0sJHJ37— Abdullah (@abdullahhammad4) June 3, 2024
That’s why the private moments of players shouldn’t be recorded. Even , they were having fun , Azam took it lightly as well— Adil Ameer Sikandar (@sikandar_ameer) June 3, 2024
Gainda means Rhino, it is used jokingly or in lighter vein for ages specially among friends, nothing abusive . Body shaming , feminism, queer etc as new after Google , tweeter etc.— InsiderNews.Com (@Insider1919) June 3, 2024

Babar Azam has certainly landed himself into hot waters after using the slur on Azam Khan. However, the skipper and wicketkeeper duo have no bad blood and have often been spotted sharing some warm moments. A similar moment occurred recently during the fourth T20I of the England versus Pakistan series where the Asian side succumbed to a 0-2 defeat to the 2022 T20 World Cup winners.
Pakistan lost the final match by seven wickets at The Oval on May 30. Azam Khan had a nightmare performance on the day that saw him depart at a duck in the first half. Nothing changed in the second half, as he missed some crucial catches to pave the way for England’s victory. However, Babar ensured that he kept his wicketkeeper’s morale high. After the game, the skipper approached Azam before putting an arm around him. He then whispered a few words in the wicketkeeper’s ears to cheer him up
