Veteran South Africa batter AB de Villiers heaped praise on India paceman Jasprit Bumrah for his brilliant performance in the second Test against England in Visakhapatnam. Bumrah claimed nine wickets across two innings and helped India register a crucial win to level the five-match series 1-1. He was the standout bowler for India on a placid surface and was also named Player of the Match despite a double century from Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Bumrah’s performance in the second Test has enabled him to jump to the top of the ICC Test Rankings for bowlers, becoming the first Indian pacer to achieve the feat. He is also the first pacer in the world to top the ICC rankings across all formats of the game.
“Bumrah bowls brilliantly. What a bowler, Jasprit Bumrah! He outbowled other Indian bowlers, but I feel the others took their turn, and it was hunting in packs,” AB de Villiers said on his YouTube channel.
“Their (other Indian bowlers) figures don’t look great, yes. But they did play a role in setting up for him. It is not an individual sport, and this is what I like about this Indian attack.”
Bumrah was too good for the star-studded English middle order and produced a sensational spell on a placid surface in the first innings.
He set up Joe Root with his sensational reverse-swinging delivery and then produced a toe-crushing yorker to get the better of Ollie Pope to break England’s back.
Bumrah also completed 150 wickets in Test cricket and became the fastest Indian pacer to achieve the feat.
Meanwhile, his yorker to dismiss Pope was one of the major highlights of his brilliance at Vizag.
De Villiers was engaged in several intense battles with Bumrah during his playing days in IPL as he also hailed the Indian paceman for his accurate yorkers.
“That (yorkers) is certainly his (Bumrah’s) weapon across all the formats he plays in. Playing against him, I would always think of the yorker as his stock threat or main threat. Even in Tests, he picks a lot of wickets with that,” de Villiers said.
