After being shocked by co-host United States in the Super Over at Dallas in their opening game, Pakistan suffered another humbling loss at the hands of India in the 2024 T20 World Cup at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Sunday.
The noise and excitement lifted in the capacity crowd at Long Island, with India fans outnumbering supporters from Pakistan as play finally resumed after the start was delayed almost an hour by rain.
Rohit Sharma-led India suffered a mid-innings collapse on a two-paced track to be all out for an underwhelming 119 in 19 overs despite a gutsy effort from Rishabh Pant (42 off 31 balls) after being put in to bat under overcast conditions.
Pakistan, who can oscillate between the sublime and ridiculous, seemed to have the game in the bag needing 48 runs off as many balls with eight wickets in hand. However, the pace combination of the ever-effective Jasprit Bumrah (3/14) and Hardik Pandya (2/24) brought India back from the dead with incisive spells that saw Pakistan lose wickets in a heap to end at 113 for seven in 20 overs. Pakistan lost by six runs in the low-scoring thriller.
It was the second-lowest total ever successfully defended at the men’s T20 World Cup. It was the lowest total India had ever defended in a full T20I, and helped extend its mark to 7-1 in T20 internationals against Pakistan.
India had beaten Ireland by eight wickets in their opening game at the same ground and now leads T20 World Cup Group A with four points and a better net run rate than the USA, who also has four points from its wins over Canada and Pakistan.
Only two teams from each of the four groups advance to the second stage. So Pakistan needs to win its remaining games against Canada and Ireland and also hope the results of other group games go in its favour to progress to the Super 8s.
“Have to win the last two matches. Will sit and discuss our mistakes but looking forward to the last two matches,” Pakistan skipper Babar Azam said after the match.
