Every year, lakhs of youth in India aspire to become IAS or IPS officers, submitting countless applications for the Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). However, the competition is fierce; only about 10-14,000 candidates typically clear the UPSC Preliminary Examination. Out of those, a select few manage to pass the Main Examination.

Even among those who succeed in the Mains, the final selection process is highly competitive, with only around 1,000 candidates securing positions in prestigious services like IAS, IPS, or IFS. This leaves many dreams unfulfilled. Interestingly, some individuals who achieve these coveted roles eventually resign from their positions. A notable example is Nimit Goyal, an IPS officer who recently made headlines after resigning from his post after a decade of service.

Nimit Goyal is a 2014 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, originally allotted to the Maharashtra cadre. He previously served as the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) in Nagpur city and was recently transferred to Mumbai, where he began his new role about 20 days ago.

Hailing from Agra in Uttar Pradesh, Nimit Goyal comes from a business family. After completing his graduation, he appeared for the UPSC Civil Services Examination, securing an impressive All India Rank (AIR) of 164, which enabled him to join the IPS. His wife, Aanchal Goyal, is also an accomplished officer, serving as an IAS officer and currently holding the position of Additional Commissioner in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation.

IPS Nimit Goyal was posted at many places after joining the police service. He was also the Additional Superintendent of Police of Sindhudurg. He also held the post of Commandant of SRPF Group 4 in Mumbai and Superintendent of Police of Aurangabad. Before becoming Mumbai DCP, he was working as a DCP in Nagpur. He submitted his resignation in July this year. He had also resigned once in 2022, but later he withdrew it.

Nimit Goyal’s resignation from the IPS has raised questions about his decision to leave such a prestigious role. Reports indicate that he plans to transition into the private sector. According to a statement he made to the Times of India, Goyal expressed his intention to take on new responsibilities in a private company. Police officials say that the resignation process may take a few months to complete because the approval of the Home Department is necessary for the resignation of an IPS officer.
