A total of four Indian cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai – have found a place in this year’s edition of the Quacquarelli Symonds Best Cities Rankings for students. In a significant move, Delhi climbed 21 places to become the second most affordable city for students. Bengaluru made a significant jump of 17 places to rank 130, making it the seventh most affordable city for students. All four Indian cities are in the top 30 for affordability. Additionally, all Indian cities feature in the top 100 for employer activity.
According to the QS rankings, Delhi ranks 57th on the list of cities that provide jobs. Mumbai ranks 58th, Chennai 96th and Bangalore 100th. On the list of cities that are good to live in, Mumbai ranks 123rd, Chennai 127th, Delhi 129th and Bangalore 135th. Among cities with a mixed student population, Chennai ranks 145th, Delhi 147th, Mumbai 148th and Bangalore 149th.
None of the Indian cities made it into the top 100 for student mix as the internationalisation of universities is still in its infancy. They also do not make it into the top 100 for attractiveness as only a relatively small number of international students currently choose India as a place to study.
In the academic year 2021-22, the total number of foreign students in Indian institutions was around 46,000, a decrease of 2 per cent from the previous year. The students came from 170 countries, with Nepal (28 per cent), Afghanistan (7 per cent), the United States (6 per cent), Bangladesh (6 per cent), the United Arab Emirates (5 per cent) and Bhutan (3 per cent) leading the pack.
Globally, London retained its place as the best student city in the world for the sixth consecutive year, followed by Tokyo in second place and Seoul in third. Munich climbed to fourth place, while Melbourne dropped to fifth. Sydney, Paris, Zurich, Berlin and Montreal follow in sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth places respectively. China (mainland) has the most cities on the rankings, followed by Taiwan with five and India and Indonesia with four each.
