Kangana Ranaut starrer Queen released a decade back and became a sleeper hit. It opened to raving reviews and has achieved a cult status over the years. A simple story of a girl who decides to go on a honeymoon to Europe on her own after she gets dumped by her fiancé a day before her wedding emerged as a trailblazing feminist film of sorts and it continues to make way to cinema pages and discussion forums. The film also starred Rajkummar Rao and Lisa Haydon.
And ever since its release, fans have been awaiting an announcement on its sequel. After multiple speculative reports that floated around through the years, director Vikas Bahl finally revealed last year that a sequel was in the works and that Kangana would be returning to reprise the character of Rani in it. Reacting to the same, she took to Instagram and exclaimed, ‘Yessss (sic)’.
And now, we have got you an exclusive update on Queen 2. News18 Showsha recently caught up with Vikas, who spoke about the film completing a decade of its release on March 7. “It is going to be ten years of Queen’s release but the number of people who keep asking me about Queen 2 makes me feel like the film released just yesterday! However, I am happy to say that we have actually finished writing our story. So, yes, the sequel should happen,” he told us.
Vikas also shared that he feels the weight of expectations as Queen set the bar too high. Though he was confident that a sequel would bring him lots of profit, he didn’t want to rush it and settle for a mediocre script. “If I didn’t feel the pressure of matching up to the expectations that people have from the sequel, I would have already made it four years back just for money,” he said.
The Super 30 and Goodbye director further continued, “Na shohrat, na paisa, bas pyaar mein hi chal raha hai mera (laughs). So yes, I knew that it would have given me the money as Queen is a money spinner of sorts. But we were very sure that we won’t do it until we get a story that delivers as much as Queen did. It wasn’t an easy task, so we waited.”
So, is there a party happening on March 7 to celebrate ten years of Queen? “It will be a double celebration for me because Shaitaan releases on March 9, two days after Queen completes ten years,” says Vikas, whose next horror film stars R Madhavan, Ajay Devgn and Jyothika. On a related note, he is also awaiting the release of the second season of his web show, Sunflower, that will drop on Zee5 on March 1.
