Kaveri Lalchand, Founder and Chief Designer, Kaveri, “As a brand and as an individual, I strongly believe the terms ‘plus-size’ and ‘body positivity’ do not belong in the same sentence.”

Plus-size fashion is a vibrant and inclusive industry catering to individuals of diverse body shapes. Embracing style and comfort, it offers a wide range of trendy and flattering clothing options. Empowering individuals to feel confident and fashionable, plus-size fashion celebrates diversity and challenges traditional beauty norms, fostering a more inclusive fashion landscape.

“I avoid the term ‘plus-size’ as it labels and boxes people into certain categories thereby defeating the goal of inclusivity, and also resurrects generations of social stigma. With regard to body positivity, it doesn’t only address the issue of size, as it is a social movement focused on the acceptance of all bodies, regardless of size, shape, height, skin tone, and gender, alongside physical characteristics such as scars and birthmarks, while challenging present-day beauty standards as presented by society and media. According to Statista, a German market and consumer data company, half of the total consumers in India wear sizes beyond US size 12 (size Large). When creating garments for the market in India, brands have to consider the fact that the female Indian body type is vastly different from the US or European body type, and also within India, it differs regionally,” adds Lalchand.

Most of the time, larger-size clothing is shapeless, ill-fitting and doesn’t celebrate curves as they should. Brands are careless about the fits and structures that need to vary from body to body. Designing for women isn’t dictated by a size or a measurement chart rather we need to allow the clothes to be completely inclusive catering to different shapes. This gives the path for designers to create not only a beautiful garment that would look good but also makes her feel good.
