She debuted as an actress in the Malayalam film Pattam Pole, and her father is the cinematographer K.U Mohanan. Her leading performance in Majid Majidi’s Beyond the Clouds, a Hindi film, won her plaudits. Since then, she has portrayed the lead role in the action flicks Petta and Master from Tamil, as well as the thriller The Great Father in Malayalam. With the goal of following in her father’s footsteps as a director or cinematographer, Malavika earned a degree in mass media.
After graduating and considering further studies, she went with her father to a commercial shoot with Mammootty for a fairness cream. After asking if Malavika was interested in acting, Mammootty offered her a part in a future Malayalam movie opposite his son Dulquer Salmaan. She gave the suggestion some thought before approving the terms of the audition and being cast in Pattam Pole.
In Majid Majidi’s play Beyond the Clouds, Malavika made her acting debut as Tara, a destitute girl from Mumbai’s Dhobi Ghat neighbourhood. Majidi chose her for the role- playing the older sister of debutante Ishaan Khatter- after she had a great audition, beating Deepika Padukone and Kangana Ranaut. Her upcoming projects include Chiyaan Vikram’s period action film Thangalaan, for which she finished dubbing recently.
