Brazil take top spot after demolishing Peru

New Delhi: The five-time world champions proved too strong for Peru with a comfortable 3-0 victory at the Beira-Rio stadium in Porto Alegre.

After their frustrating draw with Ecuador on Sunday, Brazil knew that not only did they have to beat Peru but they had to do this in a convincing manner.

Although they weren't at their very best they completely dominated their weak opponents, and could have won by a greater difference.

Brazil won the match with two first half goals from Luis Fabiano and another from Felipe Melo after the break.

Dunga's side started brightly, and Luis Fabiano found the back of the net within the first few minutes, but his effort was disallowed for an offside infringement.

But Brazil continued to pile heavy pressure on the Peruvian goal, and in the 16th minute they were awarded a penalty when Kaka was impeded in the area. Luis Fabiano stepped up to the spot and fired Brazil ahead.

The Selecao began to find their rhythm as the half progressed, and the likes of Kaka, Robinho, and Daniel Alves looked particularly dangerous.

In the 27th minute Alves caught out Luis Fabiano in the area with a perfect ball and the Sevilla striker poked the ball into the back of the net.

After the break the Brazil's slowed down the tempo of the match, and they seemed happy to play the ball around in the midfield.

Peru tried their best to contain them, but without any luck, as the Brazilians caused havoc in their area each time they moved forward.

Brazil had the match completely controlled, and they played inside the Peru half, looking for another opening.

In the 64th minute Felipe Melo bursted past two defenders with a great deal of power, before beating Leao Butron with a sublime chip.

Towards the end of the game Brazil created a number of opportunities to extend their advantage, but they couldn't manage to do so.

Ronaldinho, who entered the field in the 77th minute, came closest with a free-kick that was saved by Butron.
