New Delhi: Chelsea assistant manager Ray Wilkins has implied that the club deem the retrospective punishments imposed by UEFA in relation to the Blues' contentious elimination from last season's Champions League.
Two key members of Chelsea's playing staff - powerful striker Didier Drogba and roaming right-back Jose Bosingwa - vehemently protested a number of decisions made by Norwegian referee Tom Henning Ovrebo during the aftermath of the club’s 1-1 away goal loss to Barcelona at the semi-final stage of the competition.
Drogba was hit with a four-game ban with an additional two games suspended, while Bosingwa faces a three-game ban with one game suspended. Chelsea fans were also alleged to have thrown missiles onto the pitch. In total, the club were fined £83,000.
Wilkins, though, has reasoned with the players' reactions and claimed high emotions were the cause.
"(The reaction) might have been excessive," he said to The Guardian. "But it was emotions boiling over in a heated situation. The club will digest the decision.
"I would imagine we'll appeal."
Elsewhere, captain John Terry was awarded a trophy outside of football. The club and country defender has been made the latest recipient of the Dad of the Year award.
"It's a great honour to be voted Dad of the Year. I have won many trophies in my career but I'm proud to say that this is up there with all of them," the 28-year-old father of three beamed to The Independent.
