Spain playmaker David Silva has signed a new five-year deal with Manchester City, tying one of the English champions' most important players to the club until the summer of 2019.

Silva joined City from Valencia in 2010 and has been instrumental in the club's rise as a force in English football, playing a key role in their Premier League title successes in 2012 and last season.

The 28-year-old Silva says on Tuesday it was a "straightforward decision to extend my stay here and spend my peak years" at City, and sees "no reason why we won't become one of the top teams in the world."

Silva is a regular in Spain's national team, with whom he won the World Cup in 2010 and the European Championship in 2012.
