New Delhi: The German football team held its first training session since the death of goalkeeper Robert Enka. Even as they continue to remain in mourning, a friendly against Ivory coast coming up in less than 48 hours, the team only showed they would play to win this one for the goalkeeper.
The German coach, Joachim Loew said, "Robert Enke was not only an extraordinary goalkeeper, he also was an extraordinary person."
It has taken nearly a week for the German team to come out of a loss. Robert Enke was not their captain nor their star striker. He was not even picked for their next friendly. But it was a loss that the nation and the squad found hard to come to terms with.
"He had characteristics which are important especially in life, in football and especially for a team," said the coach.
Instead of playing a friendly against Chile, the entire team felt it best to spend the weekend remembering Enke.
Footballers, politicians, the public, friends and family all had gathered at Hanover 96. It was to mourn the death of a man who had probabaly been on the brink of giving it all up.
Joachim Loew said, "At that moment I think we all had no chance to stop him. As sad as that is, we must not make any accusations."
The coach believes that it's only through the game that the German team can pull things together.
"During training, I also had the feeling and noticed that the team, that all players, were grounded and will get a good performance. It was important for the players to get into the normal rhythm again."
The footballers take the field against Ivory Coast on Wednesday. They will be playing to win for an ardent lover of the game who had lost his way.
