I will quit if Ronaldo fails to win Ballon d'Or: Ferguson
Sir Alex Ferguson has also called for more protection to Cristiano Ronaldo.

New Delhi: Manchester United shared the points with Villarreal at the Estadio El Madrigal Wednesday evening, but Sir Alex Ferguson believed his side deserved better.

He also said in a separate interview that he would be shocked if Cristiano Ronaldo's 42-goal exploits last season were not rewarded with the Ballon d'Or.

The Champions League encounter between Villarreal and Manchester United ended goal-less for the fourth time in a row.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson recently called for more protection to be offered to his winking wing wizard Cristiano Ronaldo and the Yellow Submarines' Capdevila was sent for an early bath for his poor challenge on the Portuguese.

The shared points mean that both sides qualify for the knock-out stages precisely one game ahead of schedule.

Speaking to ITV after the game, Ferguson said that he believed his side played the better football, and mentioned that he thought Villarreal were content to play for the draw.

"We deserve better," Ferguson said. "There was a marked improvement in terms of possession on the ball in the second half, but I'm satisfied with the overall performance. We controlled the game."

Regarding the tactics that Villarreal employed, he added: "I think they were happy to get the draw. Simple as that."

Concerning the special treatment that Ronaldo received, he said: "Ronaldo got protection tonight from the referee. The referee was good. He was a very strong referee."

Meanwhile on SKY Italia, Ferguson was asked whether Ronaldo deserves to win the Ballon d'Or, to which he replied (with a smile):

"If Ronaldo doesn't win the Ballon D'Or this season I will quit as manager."

Three of Ronaldo's main competitors for the golden ball are Barcelona's Lionel Messi, Real Madrid's Iker Casillas, and Liverpool's Fernando Torres.
