Despite all the differences and disappointments early in the season, it seems as if Xavi Hernandez has found a sliver of a lease of new life in Barcelona.
And his efforts have not gone unnoticed with Barcelona president Joan Laporta coming out to state that he wishes for the ex-Barcelona midfielder to reconsider his decision and potentially continue to stay at the club.
“Xavi insists on saying he won’t change his mind and he’s gonna leave in June but… we will see”.
“I’d really, really, really like Xavi to change his mind and stay as Barça manager”.
“I won’t put pressure on Xavi. It depends on him, he’s aware of my desire for him to stay here. We will see at the end of the season”, told Laporta to Mundo Deportivo.
“I still hope to keep Xavi next season, but it’s only up to him”.
Xavi announced in January that he shall be stepping away from the head coach role in Barcelona at the end of the season.
“The day my players no longer follow me, I’ll pack my bags and leave,” Xavi told reporters.
“If I hadn’t won La Liga last year I wouldn’t be here.
“When someone tells me there’s a problem, I’ll leave.
“I love this club. I’m here to bring something to it. If I don’t do it, I’ll go home,” the former Barca captain added.
Defensively the Catalans have struggled this year which is in stark contrast to last season’s Liga success.
But after a rather dismal start to the season, Barcelona have recently hit a rich vein of form, clinching 4 wins and a draw in their last 5 La Liga fixtures.
With newfound opponents Girona succumbing to a slump as well, Barcelona have jumped over them in the table, now sitting at second, still 8 points away from eternal rivals Real Madrid.
The Catalans also battled it out against a tough Napoli side to secure qualification to the quarter-finals, where they will next face French champions PSG.
