New Delhi: Takayuki Morimoto's first-half goal gave Catania the lead, but Daniele De Rossi goal in added time saw Roma scrape a vital point.
The match began at a slow pace, with neither side able to impose their game. Still, Catania looked clearly brighter in the early stages, with Morimoto keen on making a difference, having had two chances in the opening minutes.
The visitors were dealt a major blow in the 19th minute as Philippe Mexes had to be substituted by Juan after picking up a knock.
Roma's first sign of danger came just 20 minutes into the game, but John Arne Riise's long range effort hit straight at Catania's custodian Andujar.
But it would be Catania to find the back of the net, through Morimoto on 22 minutes. A scramble inside the Roma box following a corner saw the fall to the Japanese, who slotted home from close range.
Roma were forced to make a second substitution just minutes later, as Marco Motta had to be brought on to replace the injured Marco Cassetti.
The rest of the first half would practically belong to Roma, who wasted two chances in the space of minutes. In the first one, De Rossi could not direct his shot goalwards, while in the second, the same De Rossi headed the ball straight at Andujar.
The intensity of the game dropped considerably in the second half, with the first chance on goal happening only in the 72nd minute, when Mascara's shot was saved by Julio Cesar.
Roma would equalise two minutes into added time, as a corner from Pizarro lands at Totti's feet and the Italian ace incidentally feed the ball across the face of the goal to De Rossi, who sent the ball in with a soft touch.
But that was not the end of the match per se, as the Catania players started protesting to the referee, which resulted in Gennaro Delvecchio being sent off before the referee whistled for full time.
