Maradona criticised Mancini's decision not to select the forward since his alleged refusal to appear as a substitute.

Manchester: Argentina legend Diego Maradona has criticised Manchester City's treatment of striker Carlos Tevez, admitting that it "hurts" him to see a player left out of consideration for first team football.

City boss Roberto Mancini insisted that Tevez will not play for the club again after he seemingly refused to appear as a substitute in a Champions League tie, but Al-Wasl manager Maradona believes that is a step too far.

"It hurts me to see it happen as a player and a human being," Maradona told Sport 360.

"If they want to give him a financial penalty then fine, but don't stop him from playing his football. The worst thing to do to a player is to stop him from playing football."

Maradona also praised the rise of City to the top of the Premier League, but added that the importance of their 6-1 victory over arch-rivals Manchester United should not be overstated.

"Man City are going through a revolution right now, just like [Roman] Abramovich did at Chelsea and I am glad to see it happening," he said.

"Alex Ferguson and Man United didn’t commit suicide. It was a tough day for Ferguson and United and three goals against them came late and in stoppage time. It can happen to any team, it can happen in football.

"As far as Man City are concerned, they are just having a good season and the financial backing is bringing about the desired results."

The former Barcelona and Napoli forward declared himself delighted with the quick adjustment of son-in-law Sergio Aguero to English football, admitting that he had thought the 23-year-old might need some time to adapt to the Premier League.

"Aguero is one of the best attackers in the world right now and he is putting in great performances game after game," he opined.

"He used to play in Madrid with Atletico and I was worried whether he'd be able to adapt to the English Premier League, but he has adapted quickly."
