Manchester United forward Rasmus Hojlund and Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz engaged in an altercation during the dying phase of a nervy Premier League contest in Birmingham on Sunday. Both players found mention on the scoresheet.
While Hojlund broke the deadlock for Manchester United early in the first half, Luiz made it all square with a prolific finish in the 67th minute. Hojlund was taken off by Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag in the second-half, with defender Jonny Evana coming in as a replacement. As the youngster was slowly making his way off the pitch, his approach did not go down well with the Aston Villa fans, who responded with a loud protest.
Hojlund hit back with a cheeky gesture. He reminded the home supporters of the scoreline, signalling that they should stay silent. That is exactly when Dougas Luiz angrily came forward and grabbed the shirt of Hojlund before pointing at the exit route.
The match looked set to end up as a draw when Scott McTominay scored a last-gasp winner for the visitors merely four minutes before the full-time whistle, silencing a full-house Villa Park.
After the goal was scored, Rasmus Hojlund broke into an emphatic celebration with Scott McTominay and other Manchester United players on the sidelines. The Danish striker was spotted putting his fingers over his nose, seemingly asking the home crowd to calm down. Luiz also pulled off an extravagant celebration after scoring the equaliser. The Brazilian international was seen shimmying in front of the opposition defence and goalkeeper Andre Onana.
Legendary English defender and former Manchester United footballer Rio Ferdinand trolled Douglas Luiz with a sarcastic post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). The footballer-turned-pundit dropped a picture of the Aston Villa forward’s hilarious celebration and wrote, “U ok, Douglas Luiz.”

Having joined Manchester United last summer, Rasmus Hojlund struggled to match the expectations during his early days at Old Trafford. The 21-year-old has now seemed to have started gaining momentum. Hojlund has so far struck in five consecutive matches for Manchester United. He will be looking to replicate the form when Manchester United take on Luton Town in an away Premier League game on February 18.
