Tevez denies knowledge of Europa League scam
City's knockout clash against Aris Thessaloniki last February in the Europa League was the target for the scam.

Manchester: Manchester City captain Carlos Tevez has denied all knowledge of a betting scam which allegedly targeted one of the club’s Europa League fixtures last season.

Evidence has recently been presented to a Greek court which suggests that City’s knockout stage clash with Aris Thessaloniki last February was the target for the scam.

The most significant element of the evidence which has so far come to light is a recording of a phone conversation in which one of the Greek side’s players is heard saying he will approach Tevez and enlist his help in carrying out the operation.

Aris midfielder Kostas Mendrinos reportedly suggests he could get teammate Nery Castillo – a former City player and fellow Spanish-speaker – to talk to the City captain and get him to allow the Greek side to kick off the match.

But a spokesman for Tevez made it clear the Argentine frontman was never approached by Castillo or anyone else regarding the scam, and denied having any knowledge of it’s existence.

"It is impossible," the spokesman told reporters.

"Carlos has never heard such a thing and no one ever approached him."
