There is no doubt that James Bond is one of the most iconic characters in the cinema. Since 1962, when the first Bond movie was released, seven actors have played the savvy spy in high-budget action thrillers. In 2021, actor Daniel Craig concluded his 15-year tenure as James Bond with No Time to Die. Now the makers are on the lookout for the next 007 spy. In recent weeks, many candidates like Rege-Jean Page, Henry Cavill, Tom Hardy, Richard Madden, Idris Elba, Henry Golding, James Norton and Aaron Taylor-Johnson have been touted as the next possible James Bond. Now it is being speculated that British actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been offered the iconic role, even though it has not been confirmed either by the makes of the Bond film or Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s agency.
Recently, former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan appeared on RTE Radio 1’s The Ray D’Arcy Show. When he was asked about his opinion of Aaron Taylor-Johnson taking up the legendary role, Brosnan gave his blessings to the 33-year-old actor. “I think the man has the chops and the talent and the charisma to play Bond, very much so,” Brosnan said of Taylor-Johnson. He also recalled working with Taylor-Johnson on the 2009 film The Greatest and said, “One of the first movies we made, one of the earliest movies, was ‘The Greatest’, and he was the greatest in it. So, yes, I read the news about his possibility of being a Bond, so I would definitely tip my hat to the fellow.”
Brosnan has acted in four James Bond films, namely GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, and “Die Another Day. Previously in a BBC interview, Brosnan had endorsed Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy as James Bond and said, “Cillian would do a magnificent job as James Bond on His Majesty’s Secret Service.”
Another former James Bond actor, George Lazenby approved of Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Lazenby told TMZ he believed Taylor-Johnson “can handle the stunts and all the ladies who love a man in a tux.”
Despite being a lucrative and prestigious role, many actors do not want to sign as James Bond because the role comes with a long commitment and terms. In 2022, Bond producer Barbara Broccoli spoke to Variety about the role and said, “When we cast Bond, it’s a 10 to 12-year commitment.” She added, “Not everybody wants to do that. It was hard enough getting Daniel Craig to do it.”
