Taylor Swift’s concert movie, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, has maintained its top position at the box office for the second consecutive weekend, surpassing director Martin Scorsese’s recent release, Killers of the Flower Moon. In its second weekend, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour raked in $10 million on Friday, accumulating a total of $32.4 million and now reaching an impressive overall revenue of $131.1 million. On the other hand, Killers of the Flower Moon debuted with earnings of $9.4 million on Friday and a cumulative total of $23 million for its opening weekend.
This historical drama delves into a series of 1920s murders that targeted the Osage Nation in Oklahoma following the discovery of oil on their land. Critics have commended the movie for its stark portrayal of the dark history of the United States. Martin Scorsese, 80, has also co-written the screenplay with Eric Roth.
It is based on David Grann’s 2017 book of the same name. The star-studded cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, Jesse Plemons, Tantoo Cardinal, John Lithgow, and Brendan Fraser. Killers of the Flower Moon is reportedly the third-best domestic opening of Scorsese’s career, followed by Shutter Island and The Departed.
Killer of the Flower Moon also marks the best wide-release debut for a film from a streaming company. While Netflix (which backed Scorsese’s last narrative feature, The Irishman, in 2019) has charted a mostly limited approach to theatrical release, Apple and Amazon, which last year, closed its purchase of MGM, have pursued more expansive theatrical strategies.
On the other hand, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour brings the widely-acclaimed singer’s recent concert tour to the big screen. This film, reportedly, has become the first concert film in history to pass the $100 million mark, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
After these two, in the third spot was Exorcist: The Believer, a horror sequel directed by David Gordon Green, which garnered $5.6 million in its third weekend, amassing a domestic gross of $54.2 million for the Universal and Blumhouse production.
Apart from these three films, the top five films at the box office this weekend also included Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie and Disney’s seasonal re-release of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas.
