2 Simple Ways to Disable Auto-Emoji on Discord
Do you want to send a message in Discord that keeps changing from text to emoji automatically? For example, when you type a text smiley face :), Discord will automatically change your emoticon into an emoji. To prevent this from happening, turn off Auto-Emoji to make sure your text goes through as you intend! This wikiHow article teaches you how to turn off Auto-Emoji in Discord.
Things You Should Know
  • Open the Discord app, click the gear icon, go to "Chat", and toggle off "Automatically convert emoticons in your messages to emoji."
  • The mobile app doesn't have this toggle, so you can use a web browser to see the toggle or the desktop app on your computer.
  • Alternatively, enter a backslash before your text that has an emoticon in it, like "\:)".

Using the Computer App

Open Discord. Click the app that looks like a controller icon. You can use this method for the desktop app for Windows and Mac computers. Since this toggle isn't in the mobile app, you can use this method to turn off auto-emoji on your Android, iPad, and iPhone as well.

Click Android 7 Settings. This gear icon is next to your Discord profile picture at the bottom of your screen. User Settings will open.

Click Chat. It's under the "App Settings" header.

Click the toggle next to "Automatically convert emoticons in your messages to emoji" to disable it. If the switch is grey and pointing to the left, it's off. If you change this setting on your computer, it will also apply to your mobile app.

Using the Mobile Website

Go to http://discord.com/login. Since the mobile app doesn't have the toggle like the computer version, you'll need to use your computer or the desktop website on your phone or tablet to turn off auto-emojis. Log in if prompted. If the app opens instead, close it and switch to the desktop site in your browser on your iPhone, iPad, or Android. If you're using Google Chrome, tap the three-dot menu icon and select Desktop Site.

Tap Android 7 Settings. This gear icon is next to your Discord profile picture at the bottom of your screen. You may need to pinch and pull your fingers to zoom and move around the screen. User Settings will open.

Tap Text & Images. It's under the "App Settings" header. If you zoomed in with the previous step, you might need to zoom out to see the menus and options.

Click the toggle next to "Automatically convert emoticons in your messages to emoji" to disable it. If the switch is grey and pointing to the left, it's off.

Using Text Commands

Open Discord and navigate to where you want to enter your message. Tap the app icon that looks like a smiling controller. Use this method if you want to temporarily stop your text from automatically turning into emoji.

Enter \ before your text. To stop Discord from automatically changing your emoticons into emoji, enter a backslash. You'll have to repeat this step, using the backslash, every time you enter an emoticon.

What's your reaction?
