How to Get Perfect Pelts
Look for three-star animals when hunting. Perfect pelts and hides can only be obtained from three-star animals. When looking at an animal that you're trying to hunt, look for an icon with three stars to the left of their name. When inspecting the animal, you'll also see the word "pristine" next to an animal that can produce a perfect pelt.
Use the right weapon. If you use a weapon that's too powerful, you'll ruin the pelt. The smallest of game must be killed with a bow and small game arrows, while larger animals can be killed with a gun. You can use a bow with poison arrows for larger animals as well. For large herbivores (like deer and bison), you can also lasso them and kill them with a knife to get a perfect pelt. If you're hunting a legendary animal, the type of weapon you use doesn't matter, as the pelt will always be the same quality no matter what.
Use the Buck Antler Trinket. This trinket gives you a better chance at getting higher-quality items when skinning animals. You can get this trinket by killing the Legendary Buck (which is located northwest of Strawberry) and bringing the Legendary Buck Antler to any fence.
Make sure the animal will land in a safe spot after you shoot it. If you're near a road or water, try to spook the animal to scare it further away from these areas. If the animal carcass gets wet or run over by a horse and/or wagon, it won't be considered perfect anymore.
Kill the animal with a headshot. Deadeye is helpful for this, as it lets you have more precision when hunting. If you shoot the animal in any other part of the body, the pelt will not be perfect. You also run the risk of the animal not dying immediately, and instead running off.
