Making Basic Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal
Bring the water to a boil in a small saucepan. This recipe will be enough to make two servings.
Add the oats and cook over medium-low heat until the water is absorbed. Be sure to cover the pot with a lid so that the steam does not escape. This will take about 5 to 8 minutes.
Heat a small saucepan over medium-low heat, then add the apples and brown sugar. You can choose to peel the apple first, or leave it unpeeled. The pieces should be a little smaller than bite-sized.
Cook the apples and brown sugar for about 2 minutes, stirring often. During this time, the sugar will caramelize and the apples will soften. Depending on how big the apple pieces are, you may have to cook them a little longer.
Gently stir the apple mixture into the oatmeal. You can do this using a wooden spoon or a rubber spatula. Make sure that the apple pieces are evenly mixed in.
Add some toppings, if desired, and give the oatmeal one final stir. At the point, the oatmeal is ready to eat, but you can give it some extra flavor and texture by adding some yummy toppings. Making Baking Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal
Pre-heat an oven to 350°F (176.7°C). Baked oatmeal is usually made in larger portions, and is perfect for feeding a crowd.
Add the milk, brown sugar, butter, cinnamon, salt, and apples into a mixing bowl. Stir them gently with a wooden spoon or rubber spatula. You can peel the apples beforehand, or leave them unpeeled.
Stir in some extra ingredients for more flavor, if desired. At this point, your oatmeal is ready to be baked, but you can add some extra goodies for more flavor and texture. Here are some ideas to get you started: 2 teaspoons (10 milliliters) vanilla extract ½ cup (75 grams) raisins ¼ cup (60 milliliters) maple syrup
Lightly grease a 2-quart (1.9 liters) casserole disk. Choose a glass casserole dish, if you can; the oatmeal will cook more evenly. If you'd like to make individual servings instead, fill a muffin pan with cupcake liners instead. This will be enough to make about 16 muffins.
Pour the oatmeal mixture into the casserole dish. Use a rubber spatula to help guide the mixture, and spread it evenly. If you are making individual servings, scoop the mixture into the cupcake liners instead.
Bake, uncovered, for 40 to 45 minutes until most of the liquid is gone. If you are baking the oatmeal in a muffin tin, bake it for only 30 minutes instead. These oatmeal muffins will be more dry than the oatmeal casserole.
Add some toppings, if desired, and serve. You can serve the oatmeal as is, or you can add a splash of milk or ½ cup (65 grams) of chopped walnuts over the top first.
