How to Tell if a Suit Fits You Just Right (for Men & Women)
When it’s time to get dressed up for a formal occasion, having a suit that fits correctly ensures you look your best. If you want to check if your suit jacket and pants are the right size, we’re here to help! Keep reading, and we’ll walk through how a suit should look from top to bottom for men or women.
Proper Suit Fit

Jacket Collar

With a proper suit jacket fit, the collar lies flat against the dress shirt underneath. Make sure both collars are tight against the back of your neck, but not so tight that they dig into your skin. Signs of a bad fit: A gap between your shirt color and the back of your neck, your collar creasing into your skin, or the fabric bunching up

Jacket Shoulders

When you have a jacket that fits perfectly, the seams sit on top of your shoulders and stop right where your shoulder meets your arm. Check that the fabric lays flat and that you can comfortably move your arms around without resistance. Signs of a bad fit: Divots or wrinkles in the fabric, or seams that are pushed too far forward or backward

Jacket Sleeves

When you put on a suit jacket, check that the armhole ends just below your armpit. Make sure the sleeves don't have any wrinkles when you relax your arms. When your sleeves are the right length, you’ll only see about ⁄4–⁄2 inch (0.64–1.27 cm) of your dress shirt sticking out. Signs of a bad fit: Angled creases in your sleeves when your arms are relaxed, your sleeves cover your wrists or hands, or too much of your dress shirt’s cuffs exposed

Jacket Closure

When you button your suit jacket, wardrobe specialist Chloe Ohayon-Crosby says, “You should be able to lift your arms without it being too tight and…without the buttons pulling.” Make sure that the fabric on the front and back of your jacket lays flat. Signs of a bad fit: An X-shaped crease on the front of the jacket, baggy or excess fabric, or gaps between your jacket lapels and dress shirt

Jacket Length

Put on your jacket and keep your arms at your side. When your suit fits well, the bottom of the jacket will line up with the first knuckle of your thumb. Turn around and check that the jacket also covers the seat of your pants while you’re standing. Signs of a bad fit: The bottom of your jacket is higher or lower than your thumb, or the fabric bunches up

Pants Waist

Pull the waistband up so it’s just below your belly button. If the suit pants fit properly, then they’ll feel snug against your stomach when you tuck in your dress shirt. Some suit pants have adjustable waistbands or belt loops so you can make small changes to the size. Signs of a bad fit: You feel pressure on your stomach or the waistband feels loose

Pants Seat

The seat of your pants should fit snugly but still allow you to move comfortably. Check that the pants fabric looks smooth and doesn’t have any creases or folds along the back. Make sure the pants don’t bunch up along your upper thigh either. Signs of a bad fit: Your pockets bulge out from your sides, the fabric pulls too tight, or the fabric bunches up

Pants Length

If your pants fit correctly, they rest on top of your shoes to form a trouser break, or a slight wrinkle right above the hem. The break size on your suit depends on your personal style, but slimmer suits look better with a smaller break and wide-leg suit pants work best with a larger break. Signs of a bad fit: You have baggy fabric around your ankle, your socks or ankles are visible, or the fabric hugs your legs too tightly

Dress Shirt

When a dress shirt fits perfectly, the collar hugs your skin without being too tight. Make sure the shoulder seams follow the top of your shoulder and the sleeves are wrinkle-free and end at your wrist. Button up the shirt and make sure the front and back of the shirt look crisp. Move your arms around to check that your shirt doesn’t pull. Signs of a bad fit: Your shirt balloons out above your waistband, your sleeves look baggy, the buttons make creases across your torso, or the sleeves cover your hands

How should a suit fit for women?

While women’s suits can vary a little more in how they look, follow these basic fit tips: Jacket Sleeves: The bottom of the jacket and the ends of the sleeves should not end at the widest points of your body, such as your bust, stomach, or hips. Jacket Shoulders: The jacket shoulder seams should end where your shoulder meets your arm. Jacket Closure: You should be able to comfortably cross your arms without the fabric pulling or feeling tight. Pants Waist: The pants waist should fit snugly below your belly button without sagging. Your jacket should cover your waistband when you raise your arms. Pants Length: The hems of your pants should end on top of your shoes with a small break (or crease) at the front of each leg if you’re wearing straight- or slim-leg pants. The hem should be about ⁄4–⁄2 inch (0.64–1.27 cm) from the ground if you're wearing wide-leg or boot-cut pants. Skirt: Pencil or A-line skirts for suits should end just above or just below your knees.
