Accessing the NFD Guardian
Become a new article booster or an admin. Either of these user rights grants you access to the tool. If you've just become a booster, you'll need to actively use NAB for a month before requesting access. Note that part three of the NAB quiz does not count in the one month. It's when you're deemed a "permanent booster" after your trial. When you're granted access, your account will be placed in the "nfd" user group. This can be verified by going into your account preferences and finding it next to "Member of groups." Here is the list of those who've been given access to the tool, but who aren't Staff members. Ensure you understand the Deletion Policy. Re-read it before using the NFD Guardian.
Open the Community Dashboard. Hover over "EXPLORE" in the top navigation bar and choose "Community Dashboard." The direct link is Special:CommunityDashboard.
Open the NFD Guardian app. Click "Start >" next to "NFD Guardian". You may need to scroll down to find it.
Reviewing All NFDs
Review the article's title. This will allow you to understand the contents of the article.
Look down at the line labeled Article Info, which has a link to the "Discussion page." Read to yourself the number of discussion page comments that exist for the given article. You'll need to view these comments later; if there are any more than 15 messages, the app will alert you if it thinks you haven't seen them yet.
Peruse the line labeled NFD Reason. This will give you an approximate idea of what type of information you are looking for in the article. "Duplicate" has a few additional pieces you'll need to look after, but if you trust other people's instincts, it can be easy for you to discern. If there are no reasons on that line, look for the Edit button in the article preview below the box displaying the article statistics, and click it. Look at the article's wikitext in that mode. If you click the Edit to Save button, you won't have the opportunity to click the Vote to Delete button if you feel a deletion is necessary as clicking the Edit to Save button will already pre-plan a Vote to Keep vote. The Edit button won't do that but will give you the option to see what reason might have been added after the initial NFD template was added. NFD Guardian only displays the first reason from the first initial edit where the NFD template was applied. As a reminder, the chart located here, gives these deletion reasons one more time. However, as a New Article Booster or Admin, you should already be familiar with all of these reasons.
Read over the article. Look for missing data or points that lead you to vote the correct way.
Look at the NFD Votes line. This line gives you pre-existing vote tallies. Admin votes count for 2 points, and Booster/NAB votes count for 1 point. 3 vote points for deletion will delete an article, but only if at least one admin votes in the process (no page is deleted with Booster votes alone). 2 vote points for keeping will remove the NFD template. If results are mixed, it will take 6 points to resolve the page. Try not to be swayed by the votes of others. Refer to the Deletion Policy any time you're unsure.
Scroll through the article, to ensure the NFD reason is valid and that the given reason for deletion can be recognized within the article.
Make your choice. You can Vote to Delete or Vote to Keep, or if you feel that it needs a general major revision to get it to pass as an acceptable article, you can "Edit to Save" the article. Click the Vote to Delete button to request that the article be deleted. Click the Vote to Keep button to request that the article be kept. Click the Edit to Save button. In this window, you edit the article to see if you can fix it enough to be able to remove the template. Be prepared to make drastic changes; enough to make the article of good quality. Upon saving, you'll be asked whether you feel confident enough, that the edit you've made would be enough to remove the NFD template yourself. Click the Yes button, if you feel you've made the article strong enough to remove the NFD. If you're rather reluctant to know whether it's good enough, select No on this box. Reviewing NFD|Dup (Duplicates)
Look at the title that may or may not be a duplicate. You'll find this article's name as the last link inside the NFD Reason line. Try to determine how these two relate to one another. Consult the Merge Policy if you're not sure whether they are duplicates or not. Deletable duplicates will always be based primarily on titles and titles only; never on content alone. It's also important to check the article history and discussion page. If the NFD template has been entered incorrectly or changed since it was first added, it may not display correctly in NFD Guardian. Checking the edit history will help you to see if that's the case.
Look at the NFD Votes line. This line gives you pre-existing vote tallies, along with who voted in what direction. Any admin vote counts for two points (either for article-deletion or removal of the template to keep) Any (New Article Booster) vote counts for one point only Three votes to delete points (Three points) will delete an article. Two keep points will keep the article and remove the NFD template. At least one admin must vote in any action that will end in the deletion of an article. If there is a mixed crowd (with some voters voting to keep while a few others vote to delete), the requirement to delete is raised to six points. Try not to vote the same way as others do, just because these users voted on them. You may feel differently on a few. Always make sure that your votes are justified to the wikiHow Deletion Policy in some way. The very last line of the display explains who decided to keep, along with those who chose to delete the article.
Decide on whether or not the article needs to be deleted. Click the Vote to Delete button to ask for the article to be deleted. Once the article has been "deleted," the original title will become a redirect forced onto the article in the NFD Reason line. Click the Vote to Keep button to request that the article be kept. In this case, once the proper ratio of votes has yielded a consensus, the NFD template will be removed (or not).
