New Delhi: ULFA militants struck again on Sunday night in Dibrugarh district, gunning down a Hindi-speaking person and injuring two others hours after Union Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal visited the state.
While seven people were killed in Kakotibari area in Sibsagar district, 16 have been killed in Sibsagar district on Sunday. With the death of a non-Assamese trader in Gosaigaon earlier on Sunday evening, the total toll in Upper Assam stands at 17.
Police in Dibrugarh said three motorcycle-borne militants came to a brick kiln at Sepon Chagolia at around 2030 hrs (IST) and fired indiscriminately with sophisticated weapons at workers there.
A worker died on the spot while two others were seriously wounded. The injured were admitted to the Assam Medical College Hospital here, they reported.
The ULFA has targeted non-Assamese people, mostly brick kiln workers and milkmen from Bihar, in a string of attacks since Friday across Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts.
In the past two days, 48 non-Assamese people have been killed by the banned outfit in the state.
Earlier in the day, Jaiswal toured areas in Tinsukia and Dibrugarh affected by the violence and assured protection to the people.
