Mumbai: The doctor's strike moves into sixth day on Saturday. With the doctors refusing to join back duty, the government is planning to terminate over 600 resident doctors. 150 doctors were issued termination orders late on Friday night.
After five days of discussions and patience refused to have an impact on the striking doctors, the civic administration and the government decided to set the record straight - 150 doctors have been issued termination orders.
As the strike enters its sixth day, 600 resident doctors and 1400 post-graduate medical students could soon face the same fate.
Authorities say such stringent action is being initiated for the first time in the history of the Municipal Corporation.
"Both registered and unregistered action against 2,000 doctors," Joint Municipal Commissioner Vijay Kalam Patil said.
Even as the sloganeering continued, the termination orders were served at their doorstep. But the agitating medicos are refusing to back-off.
"We will fight till the end...we are united for our cause, " says Dr Ramesh Kina post-graduate medical student.
Several talks and negotiations have failed. Now their careers are on the line but these doctors remain unfazed. They believe that their agitation can alone shape their future.
Dr Supriya Kulkarni says, “The public will suffer, not just us. If they suffer, the government is to be blamed if they remove 6,000 doctors''.
From what started as a protest demanding additional security, the strike has spiraled into a clash between the government and the resident doctors. With neither of the groups in a mood to relent a resolution to this crises doesn’t seem in sight anytime soon.
The major demands of doctors are increased stipend, filling up backlog of doctors, providing adequate security, decreasing their fees and modifying the teaching system.
On Friday, the doctors decided to start a parallel OPD (outdoor patient department) centre outside the Nair hospital in South Central Mumbai to attend to emergency patients.
