MYSORE: The Department of Higher Education has approved the establishment of two Centres of Excellence for studies in Classical Kannada and Telugu at the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) in Mysore.According to CIIL Director Rajesh Sachdeva, the two research centres will work on various schemes and activities like research, documentation, propagation and teaching of these languages.He said that these centres will also coordinate such work undertaken by individuals and institutions in states, union territories and abroad and will provide linkages to studies in other classical languages in the world.“The centres will procure manuscripts and undertake digitisation and publish books related to classical Kannada and Telugu.They will award a certificate of honour along with cash awards to distinguished scholars of national and international repute.They will also make documentaries of living scholars, create avenues for interdisciplinary research involving related studies of numismatics, epigraphy, archaeology and ancient history and explore linkages of classical languages with classical music and dance forms.They will link classical languages and modern technology and will translate classical texts to other Indian languages, English and selected European languages,” he added.The centres will create Classical Language Chairs in various Indian universities.He said that each centre will be headed by a project director and will have 37 persons each, including research scholars, research fellows and support staff
