CHENNAI: Police achieved a breakthrough in 10 hours when they arrested two men, who were part of a quartet, that waylaid and stole `9 lakh from an employee of a chicken centre in Royapuram on Sunday night. A substantial part of the stolen cash was recovered.Announcing the arrests, Joint Commissioner (North Zone) N K Senthamaraiakannan told reporters that the victims — Saravanan, who worked as supervisor at Khan Chicken Centre, on Adam Street, Royapuram, and his assistant Suresh were walking along Cemetry Road with the day’s collection of `9.04 lakh. Around 7 pm, a four-member gang waylaid the duo and robbed the cash at knifepoint. “The robbers wore masks,” the JCP said.On the basis of a complaint lodged by Saravanan, a special team started investigations. “We got clues within two hours after we questioned Saravanan and Suresh about the physical appearance of the four men,” the police officer said.The breakthrough came in the next eight hours, when the team zeroed in on Sathish (21) and Jagadish (23), both from Royapuram. Police picked up the two and questioned them. Later they reportedly confessed to the robbery. They pointed out Perumal (24) of Bharathi Nagar, Korukkupet, as the mastermind. “It was Perumal who watched the movements of the supervisor for the last two weeks and hatched the plan to rob him,” Senthamaraiakannan said.While the team recovered `8.54 lakh from the arrested men, a dragnet has been spread for Perumal and another accomplice Prakash.Raids in Fertility Clinics Yield Huge Haul of Cash A huge haul of unaccounted money and gold and diamond jewellery were seized from the residential premises and hospitals of a group of doctors engaged in fertility treatment of childless couples during the recent raid conducted by the Investigation Directorate of the Income Tax Department in Chennai.On November 24-25, the IT Department raided houses and hospitals belonging to Dr Kamala Selvaraj, Dr T Kamaraj and Dr Chandralekha. Dr Kamala Selvaraj, daughter of yesteryear cinema legend Gemini Ganesan, runs the G G Fertility Centre at Nungambakkam. The searches were also conducted at Akash Fertility Centre in Vadapalani run by Dr Kamaraj and his wife Jeyarani and Iswarya Fertility Hospital in Adyar.In a press release, the department said more than 150 officers and officials were involved in the search and seizure operations conducted in the fertility centres engaged in a specialty treatment called ‘Assisted Reproduction’ for childless couples with facility to surrogate mother and so on. The raids were simultaneously conducted in Palani, Coimbatore and Madurai.The search resulted in seizure of unaccounted cash of `5.05 crore and gold and diamond jewellery valued at `48 lakh. Incriminating documents showing suppression of receipts were found and seized. Further investigation is in progress, the release said.
