BALASORE: A woman was allegedly attacked in Badampahad area of Mayurbhanj district while another was stripped in a Balasore village over suspected sorcery. While Mayurbhanj police have arrested the accused, the culprits in the latter case are still at large. Forty-year-old Duli Marandi of Jharanaghati village under Berhampur police limits in Balasore district was branded a witch following the death of two persons. The villagers also accused her of grabbing land with help of a tantrik. She was stripped, beaten up and asked to leave the village with her family. While OIC of Berhampur police station Brahmananda Nayak claimed that the matter had been resolved in a village committee meeting, the villagers reportedly drove them out of the village. Duli then approached the Sub-divisional Police Officer SC Mallick and lodged an FIR. The police have registered a case and are investigating. Duli has taken shelter in her parental house in Kaptipada.In the Mayurbhanj incident, the police have arrested one Somanath Guia for allegedly attacking his nephew’s wife Sunita Guia suspecting her to be a witch. She was critically injured in the attack.Police said Somanath’s son was suffering from prolonged illness and he suspected Sunita of practising witchcraft on him. The accused has been remanded in judicial custody.
