CHENNAI: Three years after the students of the Madras Medical College started a humble Blood Donors Club, they have managed to gather an impressive 35,000 units of blood from donors. This has been achieved through the work of its 2500 members who have conducted 344 camps.Appreciating the dedication with which the doctors-to-be have been helping save lives, Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr V S Vijay said that every single unit that they managed to get had the potential to save four people. He went on to explain that not only could it be given in whole to a person who needed it, the plasma, platelets and factors from the same unit of blood could all be used to save different people. He also proudly stated that as per the WHO guidelines, 1 per cent of a populations blood could suffice for the needs of society, and Tamil Nadu had managed to collect much more than that amount.MMC Dean Dr V Kanagasabai also said that it was a matter of pride that close to 99 percent of the blood that is collected in Tamil Nadu was from donors and only a fraction is from direct relatives.Chennai Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy urged students to carry on the good work while keeping their bodies fit, fine and drug and alcohol free - failure to live thus would mean that their blood would not be available for a person who needed it in an emergency, he added.
