The AP High Court on Friday directed the Medical Council of India (MCI) to sanction 50 additional MBBS seats to the Osmania Medical College from the next academic year, 2013-14.
While dealing with a writ appeal filed by the MCI against a single judge order, a division bench comprising justices V Eswaraiah and N Ravi Shankar directed the government to rectify the defects pointed out by the MCI for the next academic year.
In July, the single judge had directed the MCI to grant provisional sanction of additional 50 MBBS seats each to the Osmania and Kakatiya medical colleges for the academic year (2012-13).
The MCI filed an appeal before division bench challenging the single judge order.
It pointed out various lapses in the colleges and submitted inspection team reports in this regard.
The MCI further informed that commencement of new courses or an increase in the number of seats of the existing MBBS/BDS courses needs to be approved/recognised by the Union government by July 15 of each calendar year for the relevant academic session.
If any approval is granted after July 15 of a year, it shall only be operative the following academic year and not the current year.
