More than eight lakh applicants from all over Tamil Nadu appeared for the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission’s (TNPSC) Village Administrative Officer (VAO) selection exams at 3,473 centres on Sunday. Chennai’s 259 centres had the highest number of people sitting for the exam — 70,000 in all — followed by Madurai with 55,000 and Thirunelveli and Salem with 51,000 respectively.
Only 1,870 vacancies were open for which the selected ones would be directly appointed without any further examinations or interviews.
R Nataraj, chairman, TNPSC, said that security was tight in the wake of the leak during the Group-II exams last month. Exam centres were monitored through closed circuit television cameras and 155 centres had web cameras to monitor the examination process. “We had escorts, mobile parties and flying squads inspecting at every turn. The exams passed off without any event,” he said.
The results for the exams would be out within 30 to 40 days, said Nataraj.
