Martur: As many as nine coaches of 12220 Secunderabad-Mumbai Duronto Express derailed near Gulbarga in Prakasam district of Karnataka. At least two people died in the incident while seven others suffered injuries.
The accident occurred in the wee hours of Saturday, at about 2.30 am. The injured have been shifted to Solapur Government Hospital in Maharashtra while the rescue and relief operation is on. According to sources, the incident may have been caused due to a track problem.
According to an eyewitness Jaishankar, two women passengers have lost their lives while one man was severely injured. He said "The train halted suddenly and pantry coach in the rear part of train got derailed. I could see some passengers lying on the tracks."
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) immediately dispatched two rescue teams to the site of the incident. OP Singh, Director Genral, NDRF told CNN IBN, "We are dispatching two teams, one from Hyderabad and another from Mumbai. The teams are being sent to provide immediate relief and rescue work. They will be carrying all technical equipment, so that people trapped inside the compartments can be pulled out."
Union railways Minister Suresh Prabhu tweeted saying "Saddened by Duranto accident. Ordered enquiry. Immediate medical relief'& other assistance rushed. Chairman Rail board asked to rush. 7 coaches unaffected by the accident have left the site with the passengers." Prabhu also ordered an investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, Railways announced ex-gratia relief of Rs two lakh to the next of kin of those killed, Rs 50,000 to each of the grievously injured, and Rs 25,000 to those with simple injuries.
