THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It was a ‘bloody’ kind of protest that MLT students took out in front of the Secretariat here today. While the people protesting for various reasons or demands have come up with a number of innovative posters written in different hues, this time around the Secretariat witnessed writings in blood. The Statue Junction turned a lab when hundreds of protestors resorted to taking out blood with syringes writing their demands in blood on white poster sheets. One of the major demands raised was the withdrawal of the government order that was passed in connection with the admission to the DBBT course or the appointment of DMLT passed candidates after giving them a training for six months. The protestors alleged that the new course will close doors of employment to hundreds of MLT qualifiers. “Right from the time MLT courses came into existence in 1961 till 1994, it was conducted as a one-year certificate course. However in 1995, the course curriculum was updated to make a two-year course and candidates who have qualified this course have been working in various institutions within the country and abroad, without a cause for complaint. There is absolutely no need for such a new course,” they said in a statement issued here on Monday. The other demands included the immediate implementation of the Paramedical Bill, formation of a special council for MLT course, implementation of minimum wage for lab technicians in the private sector, action against unauthorised institutions conducting lab technician course and standardisation of working hours in private institutions.
