KOCHI: Though there are many rules in the Constitution to keep the surroundings clean,  they are hardly kept. If this is due to lack of awareness, something should be done about it. ‘Aadya — The First Step’, a students community formed by the students of National College for Teacher Education and National School, Vengola, Perumbavoor, was inaugurated  on Independence Day by Justice V R Krishna Iyer. He handed over the flag of ‘Aadya’ to the students. The community will be dealing with socially relevant issues with an aim to suggest corrective measures. As part of their first step they will be organising a ‘Spit-free Kochi’ campaign next month. The aim  is  to make people aware of how spitting causes health problems like TB. Signature campaigns will be submitted to the Kochi Mayor.Spitting in public will be made a punishable act with the help of the police. The community is a platform for the young to voice their thoughts independently. Anti-littering laws and waste disposal system are the next ventures. ‘Aadya’ will form similar student units in other schools and colleges of the city.“There is a need for good student communities and ‘Aadya’ is a first step,” said Thasneem A, president of ‘Aadya’. Mayor Tony Chammany lauded the initiative.
