New Delhi: Allahabad High Court has issued notices to Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer and others asking it to include extradited gangster Abu Salem's name in the voter's list of Azamgarh.
Salem had filed a petition challenging non-inclusion of his name in the voters' list of Azamgarh, which is his home district.
The court passed the order after hearing Salem's lawyer Harjot Singh, who said that denial of voting right to his client was contrary to the affidavit filed by the Government of India and the CBI in Portugal at the time of his extradition.
The affidavit clearly stated that Salem was a citizen of India and resident of 42, Patahantola at Sarai Meer in Azamgarh.
The lawyer said Salem wanted to contest Assembly elections from Sarai Meer but his name was not even included in the voter's list.
Salem's appeal to include his name in the voter list was rejected by the district authorities of Azamgarh and later by the Chief Electoral Officer.
