BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday gave away the Sahitya Akademi awards for 2007 and 2008. The award consists of Rs 25,000 in cash and a citation.The awardees of 2007 were Manoj Kumar Mohapatra (novel), Bisnu Sahu (short story), Aparna Mohanty (kabya kabita), Ramchandra Mishra (drama and one-act play), Rabindra Prasad Panda (criticism and essay), Rabi Tripathy (biography and travelogue), Monalisa Jena (translation), Ramesh Patri (children’s literature) and Alekh Chandra Padhiary (melodrama).The awardees of 2008 were Bhima Prusti (novel), Prakash Mohapatra (short story), Sunil Prusti (kabya kabita), Prasanna Dash (drama and one-act play), Gouranga Charan Das (criticism and essay), Manoranjan Pradhan (biography and travelogue), Asit Mohanty (translation), Manas Ranjan Samal (children’s literature) and Brundaban Jena (melodrama).At a function organised to mark the occasion, Naveen said Oriya language is very old and rich. He said more translation of Oriya literary works was needed to make them popular across the world.Culture Minister Prafulla Samal, principal secretary in the Tourism and Culture Department Ashok Tripathy, Orissa Sahitya Akademi president Dr Ramchandra Behera, vice-president Giri Dandsena and secretary Bijay Kumar Nayak attended.
