BANGALORE: The Rajbhavan Road handles a substantial amount of traffic. An overflowing drain near the GPO has been causing distress to both pedestrians and vehicles. Surrounded by the Vidhana Soudha and Cubbon Park, the locality is known for the high profile dignitaries it sees passing thorough. Not only is the drain overflowing, it is also uncovered. The overflow did not happen overnight. In fact it has been overflowing for almost a fortnight now. However, due to the negligence of the civic agencies it has reached a stage where even passing by it has become a Herculean task. The drain also made traffic movement extremely difficult as vehicles tended to avoid moving through the vicinity of the drain leading to traffic jams. This has only added to the commotion caused by the Metro construction. They say, the stench exuding from the drain is unbearable. To add to it there is garbage all around the drain. Public urination is not uncommon here either.Adding to the woes of the pedestrians, the drain water has overflowing on the road. Shruthi, a pedestrian said, “It is hard to cross the road due to heavy vehicular movement. The drains has made it worse.” An employee of an office on Dr Ambedkar Road added that the foul smell from the drain restricted the vehicular movement to the left side of the road causing severe problems. A motorist on the road, Shiva, said, “When the signal turns red, traffic queues up all the way until almost Minsk Square. I had the misfortune to be stuck right next to the drain.” The BWSSB executive engineer, Sathish asserted that the drain has been in the same state for many days and that it didn’t belong to the jurisdiction of the BWSSB as there is no further passage for the drain. Somashekhar, BBMP executive engineer (east), said, “The metro work has destroyed a few drain pipes and hence caused the overflow. The ‘Namma Metro’ authorities will ensure that the problem is solved soon.”
