Arm-twisting: DMK chief bats for Maran
M Karunandihi has said he would be the first person to act against Dayanidhi Maran if he was found guilty of 'arm-twisting' charges.

Salem: Dismissing the 'arm-twisting' charges against Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran as 'baseless', DMK President M Karunandihi on Sunday said he would be the first person to take action against Maran if he was found guilty.

Talking to reporters, he said the charges levelled against Maran were borne out of jealousy and anger and were aimed at diverting the attention of the people.

Maran is at the centre of controversy following allegations that that he tried to 'arm-twist' the Tatas to part with their DTH business for Sun TV network, owned by his brother Kalanidhi Maran.

Denying the charge, Maran had filed a defamation suit, stating that the article was motivated, malicious and defamatory in nature and had caused great mental pain and agony, besides resulting in lowering his reputation.

When asked about the demand for Maran's resignation from the Union cabinet, Karunanidhi said there was no truth in the charge against him.

"It's all based on rumours and hearsay. He (Maran) has filed a case. If the charges are proved and if he is found guilty, I myself will initiate action against him," he added.

Dayanidhi Maran himself claimed on Sunday that the allegations of arm-twisting Tatas was part of a conspiracy to stop the 'One India Scheme' announced by him.

In a statement, Mr Maran ridiculed the former BJP president and Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani's demand of a detailed enquiry into the allegation, made by a section of the press in a pre-planned manner.

He charged that it was not fair on the part of the BJP leaders to demand an enquiry against him, when they did not seek enquiry or took any action against the BJP leaders who accepted bribe which were exposed by the Tehelka.
