Arunachalam junks mole-cular theory
V S Arunachalam denies allegations that he was the mole in Prime Minister Narasimha Rao's Office.

New Delhi: Former Scientific Adviser to Defence Minister V S Arunachalam on Wednesday rubbished reports that he was the US mole in the PMO during P V Narasimha Rao's regime and threatened to file defamation suit in the wake of media reports in this connection.

"At least I should know that I am not not the mole. My family and I are totally devastated (by the media reports). I am very clear I will definitely file charges of defamation of character and seek reparation for the damage caused to my reputation," he said.

He expressed surprise over media reports that suggested he was the alleged mole referred in BJP leader Jaswant Singh's book A Call to Honour and was at a loss to know the reasons behind them.

Arunachalam said he was then (during the period in controversy) Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister and was never in the Prime Minister's Office.

"I handed over charge of Scientific Adviser to Dr Abdul Kalam and afterwards I never went back to the government. And when I find my name is taken in this fashion I feel that I should take whatever steps that are necessary to free my name," he said.

To a question, Arunachalam said he had no no clue as to why his name was being bandied about due to which he and his family members were going through a harrowing time.

Asked whether nuclear secrets were being passed on to US, Arunachalam said he was a scientist and he would not not know whether secrets were being passed.

What's your reaction?
