BHUBANESWAR: In a shocking incident, an autorickshaw driver was stabbed to death by a gang of bullies in full public glare just outside the Bhubaneswar railway station on Friday. The driver, Alekh Pradhan, cried for help when he was attacked, but no one came forward. Bleeding profusely, he was rushed to hospital after the assailants fled the spot. Alekh succumbed later. The incident occurred at about 3 pm. By the time Government Railway Police reached the spot, it was all over.Alekh, a native of Nayagarh’s Khandapara, had a tiff with a group of people over consumption of liquor in his auto. The miscreants left the spot only to return a few minutes later. Locals said there were six of them who started assaulting the auto driver and one of them brought out a knife and stabbed him. He was apparently stabbed thrice.The auto driver had returned from lunch when he saw his vehicle being used for consumption of liquor by three persons. He got into an argument with them.As the miscreants fled on their bikes after stabbing him, some bystanders came to Alekh’s rescue and took him to hospital, but it was too late. He had sustained deep injuries and lost too much blood.When GRP finally began investigation, it found the blood-stained knife used in the crime in an autorickshaw, liquor bottles and six abandoned autorickshaws at the spot. Those were seized. No one has been arrested yet though police seem to have closed in on the identity of the assailants.Such an incident was waiting to happen in the railway station area since the vehicle stand and parking lots have long become a den of anti-socials. The railway police has turned a blind eye to the situation leading to increasing incidence of drugging and looting of passengers and peddling of contraband in the vicinity.Alekh was driving the autorickshaw of a resident of Dumduma Housing Board Colony.
