Bal Thackeray turns 79, refuses gifts
In a report appearing in Sena mouthpiece Saamna, Thackeray said he did not like the bouquets and garlands being brought.

Mumbai/New Delhi:Bala Saheb Thackeray turns 79 on Monday and the Sena supremo has appealed to his party men not to visit him with bouquets at his residence Matoshree.

Bala Saheb's nephew Raj Thackeray, who had quit the party on December 18 after a difference of opinion, called on him at his residence.

"We just exchanged birthday greetings. We didn't discuss tour or any politics. I can't say anything else," said Raj.

In a report in the Sena mouthpiece, Saamna, Thackeray said he did not like the bouquets and garlands being brought by Shiv Sainiks to go through security checks.

He advised the Sainiks to deposit the cash, spent on garlands and bouquets, in a box that would be kept at Matoshree and write their names and addresses to be published later in Saamna.

However, he said that he has been keeping a watch on the developments in the party. "I am mentally strong to take note of the ongoing developments," he said.

The birthday celebrations are expected to be low-key. Apart from attending a meeting at the Shanmukhananda Hall, the Sena chief would not be attending any other function.

This is the first time after his nephew Raj quit Sena on December 18, that the senior Thackeray will address a public function.

Raj Thackeray is also expected to call on him at his residence some time on Monday.

If the uncle and nephew meet, then it would be their first meeting since Raj quit the party on December 18 and announced his intention of forming a separate party.
